1 El pueblo proclamó rey a Joacaz, hijo de Josías, como sucesor de su padre en Jerusalén.2 Joacaz comenzó a reinar a los veintitrés años y reinó tres meses en Jerusalén.3 El rey de Egipto lo destronó en Jerusalén e impuso al país un impuesto de tres mil cuatrocientos kilos de plata y treinta y cuatro kilos de oro.4 Nombró rey de Judá y de Jerusalén a su hermano Eliaquín, cambiando su nombre por el de Joaquín. A su hermano Joacaz, Necao se lo llevó prisionero a Egipto.5 Joaquín comenzó a reinar a los veinticinco años y reinó once años en Jerusalén. Ofendió con su conducta al Señor, su Dios.6 Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, emprendió una campaña militar contra él, y lo llevó a Babilonia cargado de cadenas.7 También se llevó a Babilonia numerosos utensilios del templo del Señor, depositándolos en su palacio de Babilonia.8 El resto de la historia de Joaquín, su perversa conducta y todo lo que hizo, está escrito en el Libro de los reyes de Israel y de Judá. Le sucedió su hijo Jeconías.9 Jeconías comenzó a reinar a los ocho años y reinó tres meses en Jerusalén. Ofendió con su conducta al Señor.10 A comienzos del año, el rey Nabucodonosor hizo que lo deportaran a Babilonia junto con los objetos más valiosos del templo del Señor, y nombró a su tío Sedecías rey de Judá y de Jerusalén.11 Sedecías comenzó a reinar a los veintiún años y reinó once años en Jerusalén.12 Ofendió con su conducta al Señor su Dios y no hizo caso al profeta Jeremías que le hablaba en nombre del Señor.13 Se rebeló contra el rey Nabucodonosor, al cual había prestado juramento de fidelidad en el nombre del Señor. Terco y obstinado, no quiso convertirse al Señor, el Dios de Israel.14 Del mismo modo todos los jefes de los sacerdotes y el pueblo pecaron sin cesar, practicando las abominaciones idolátricas de las naciones y contaminando el templo que el Señor se había consagrado en Jerusalén.15 El Señor, Dios de sus antepasados, en su afán de salvar a su pueblo y a su templo, les envió continuos mensajeros.16 Pero se burlaron de ellos, menospreciaron sus palabras, y se mofaron de sus profetas, colmando así la ira del Señor contra su pueblo, hasta el punto que ya no hubo remedio.17 El Señor mandó contra ellos al rey de los caldeos, que mató a espada a sus jóvenes en el santuario mismo, sin perdonar a nadie, ni muchacho ni doncella, ni anciano ni anciana: Dios entregó a todos en su poder.18 Nabucodonosor se llevó a Babilonia todos los objetos del templo de Dios, grandes y chicos, los tesoros del templo, los del rey y los de sus jefes.19 El templo del Señor fue consumido por las llamas, las murallas fueron demolidas, los palacios incendiados y todos los objetos preciosos destruidos.20 Nabucodonosor deportó a Babilonia a los que habían escapado de la espada, los cuales pasaron a ser esclavos del rey y de sus hijos hasta que se estableció el imperio persa.21 Así se cumplió la palabra del Señor pronunciada por Jeremías: «La tierra descansará asolada durante setenta años hasta que recupere sus años de descanso sabático».22 El año primero de Ciro, rey de Persia, en cumplimiento de la profecía de Jeremías, el Señor despertó el espíritu de Ciro, rey de Persia, que publicó de palabra y por escrito por todo su reino este edicto:23 «Así dice Ciro, rey de Persia: El Señor, Dios del cielo, me ha dado todos los reinos de la tierra y me ha encomendado construirle un templo en Jerusalén de Judá. Los que de entre ustedes pertenezcan a su pueblo, que regresen, y que el Señor su Dios esté con ellos».

1 El año noveno del reinado de Sedecías, el día diez del mes décimo, Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, se presentó con todo su ejército ante Jerusalén y la sitió, levantando alrededor una empalizada.2 El sitio de la ciudad se prolongó hasta el año undécimo de Sedecías.3 El día nueve del cuarto mes, cuando el hambre se hizo insoportable en la ciudad y la gente no tenía nada que comer,4 abrieron una brecha en la ciudad; todo el ejército huyó de noche por la puerta entre los dos muros, cerca del jardín del rey, y escaparon por el camino del Arabá, mientras los caldeos estrechaban el cerco de la ciudad.5 Pero el ejército caldeo persiguió al rey y le dio alcance en la llanura de Jericó; entonces todas sus tropas se dispersaron.6 Apresaron al rey Sedecías y lo llevaron a Riblá, ante el rey de Babilonia, y allí le comunicaron la sentencia.7 El rey de Babilonia ordenó que degollaran a sus hijos en su presencia y a él le sacó los ojos, lo encadenó y lo llevó cautivo a Babilonia.8 El día siete del quinto mes –era el año décimonoveno de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia–, Nabuzardán, jefe de la escolta y ministro del rey de Babilonia,9 llegó a Jerusalén, e incendió el templo del Señor, el palacio del rey y todas las casas de Jerusalén.10 El ejército de los caldeos que estaba a su mando destruyó las murallas de Jerusalén.11 Nabuzardán, jefe de la escolta, llevó cautivos a los sobrevivientes que quedaban en la ciudad, a los desertores que se habían pasado al rey de Babilonia y a todos los demás.12 Sólo dejó alguna gente del pueblo para el cultivo del campo y de los viñedos.13 Los caldeos rompieron las columnas de bronce, las bases y la pila de bronce que había en el templo del Señor, y se llevaron el bronce a Babilonia.14 Tomaron todas las bandejas, palas, cuchillos, ollas y todos los utensilios de bronce del servicio sagrado.15 El jefe de la escolta tomó también los incensarios, aspersorios y demás objetos de oro y plata.16 Era imposible calcular el peso del bronce de las dos columnas, de la pila y de las bases hechas por Salomón para el templo del Señor, todo ello de bronce.17 Cada columna tenía una altura de nueve metros, con un capitel de bronce de dos metros y medio de altura; en torno al capitel había una rejilla con granadas; todo ello de bronce. La segunda columna era igual.18 El jefe de la escolta hizo prisioneros al sumo sacerdote Serayas, al sacerdote Sofonías, que le seguía en dignidad, a los tres guardias de la puerta,19 al oficial que mandaba a los soldados y a cinco consejeros del rey que fueron encontrados en la ciudad; al secretario del general del ejército, encargado del alistamiento y a sesenta hombres que había en la ciudad.20 Nabuzardán, jefe de la escolta, los apresó y los llevó ante el rey de Babilonia a Riblá.21 Y el rey de Babilonia los mandó matar en Riblá, en la región de Jamat. Así fue deportado Judá lejos de su tierra.22 Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, puso al frente de los que había dejado en Judá a Godolías, hijo de Ajicán, hijo de Safán.23 Cuando los jefes y la tropa se enteraron de que el rey de Babilonia había nombrado gobernador a Godolías, fueron a presentarse a él en Mispá. Eran: Ismael, hijo de Netanías; Juan, hijo de Carej; Seraya, hijo de Tanjumet, natural de Natuf, y Azanías, natural de Maacá, con sus hombres.24 Godolías les juró: –Nada teman de los caldeos; quédense en el país; sométanse al rey de Babilonia y les irá bien.25 El séptimo mes, Ismael, hijo de Netanías, hijo de Elisamá, perteneciente a la familia del rey, vino con diez hombres e hirió mortalmente a Godolías y a los judíos y caldeos que estaban con él en Mispá.26 Todo el pueblo, chicos y grandes, y los jefes de las tropas fueron a refugiarse a Egipto por temor a los caldeos.27 Cuando Jeconías, rey de Judá, llevaba ya treinta y siete años desterrado, el día veintisiete del mes duodécimo, Evil Merodac, rey de Babilonia, con motivo de su coronación, indultó a Jeconías, rey de Judá, y lo sacó de la cárcel.28 Le dio un trato de favor con preferencia a los otros reyes que estaban con él en Babilonia.29 Así, Jeconías dejó el uniforme de presidiario y comió con el rey todos los días de su vida.30 El rey proveyó a su sustento diario mientras vivió.
Jeremiah 25
1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (that was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon),2 which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem:3 “For twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, to this day, the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken persistently to you, but you have not listened.4 You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although the LORD persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets,5 saying, ‘Turn now, every one of you, from his evil way and evil deeds, and dwell upon the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers from of old and forever.6 Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.’7 Yet you have not listened to me, declares the LORD, that you might provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.8 “Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words,9 behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation.10 Moreover, I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the grinding of the millstones and the light of the lamp.11 This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.12 Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the LORD, making the land an everlasting waste.13 I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations.14 For many nations and great kings shall make slaves even of them, and I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”15 Thus the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.16 They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of the sword that I am sending among them.”17 So I took the cup from the LORD's hand, and made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink it:18 Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day;19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people,20 and all the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of the land of Uz and all the kings of the land of the Philistines (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod);21 Edom, Moab, and the sons of Ammon;22 all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastland across the sea;23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair;24 all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed tribes who dwell in the desert;25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media;26 all the kings of the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of Babylon shall drink.27 “Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of the sword that I am sending among you.’28 “And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: You must drink!29 For behold, I begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of hosts.’30 “You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them: “‘The LORD will roar from on high, and from his holy habitation utter his voice; he will roar mightily against his fold, and shout, like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.31 The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth, for the LORD has an indictment against the nations; he is entering into judgment with all flesh, and the wicked he will put to the sword, declares the LORD.’32 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, disaster is going forth from nation to nation, and a great tempest is stirring from the farthest parts of the earth!33 “And those pierced by the LORD on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.34 “Wail, you shepherds, and cry out, and roll in ashes, you lords of the flock, for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come, and you shall fall like a choice vessel.35 No refuge will remain for the shepherds, nor escape for the lords of the flock.36 A voice—the cry of the shepherds, and the wail of the lords of the flock! For the LORD is laying waste their pasture,37 and the peaceful folds are devastated because of the fierce anger of the LORD.38 Like a lion he has left his lair, for their land has become a waste because of the sword of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.”
