1 El año quince del reinado del emperador Tiberio, siendo Poncio Pilato gobernador de Judea, Herodes rey de Galilea, su hermano Filipo rey de Iturea y de la región Traconítida, y Lisanias rey de Abilene,2 en tiempos de los sumos sacerdotes Anás y Caifás, la palabra de Dios vino sobre Juan, el hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.3 Y fue por toda la región del Jordán predicando un bautismo de conversión para el perdón de los pecados,4 como está escrito en el libro de los oráculos del profeta Isaías: Voz del que grita en el desierto: preparen el camino al Señor; nivelen sus senderos;5 todo barranco será rellenado y toda montaña o colina será rebajada; los caminos torcidos se enderezarán y los desnivelados se rectificarán.6 Y todos verán la salvación de Dios.7 Decía a la gente que venía a ser bautizada por él: –Raza de víboras, ¿quién les enseñó a escapar del juicio inminente?8 Den frutos que prueben su conversión, y no anden diciendo: «Somos descendientes de Abrahán». Porque les digo que Dios puede sacar de estas piedras descendientes de Abrahán.9 Ya está el hacha puesta a la raíz de los árboles, y todo árbol que no dé buen fruto va a ser cortado y echado al fuego.10 La gente le preguntaba: –¿Qué tenemos que hacer?11 Y les contestaba: –El que tenga dos túnicas, dé una al que no tiene, y el que tenga comida compártala con el que no la tiene.12 Vinieron también a bautizarse algunos de los que recaudaban impuestos para Roma y le dijeron: –Maestro, ¿qué tenemos que hacer?13 El les respondió: –No exijan nada fuera de lo establecido.14 También los soldados le preguntaban: –¿Y nosotros qué tenemos que hacer? Juan les contestó: –A nadie extorsionen ni denuncien falsamente, y conténtense con su sueldo.15 El pueblo estaba a la expectativa y todos se preguntaban si no sería Juan el Mesías.16 Entonces Juan les dijo: –Yo los bautizo con agua; pero viene el que es más fuerte que yo, a quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de sus sandalias. El los bautizará con Espíritu Santo y fuego.17 En su mano tiene la horquilla para separar el trigo de la paja y recoger el trigo en su granero; pero la paja la quemará con un fuego que no se apaga.18 Con estas y otras muchas exhortaciones anunciaba al pueblo la buena noticia.

2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 3
1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’”4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
