1 Joás tenía siete años cuando empezó a reinar. Reinó cuarenta años en Jerusalén; su madre se llamaba Sibyá, y era de Berseba.2 Joás agradó con su conducta al Señor mientras vivió el sacerdote Yoyadá,3 quien le proporcionó dos esposas de las que Joás tuvo hijos e hijas.4 Algún tiempo después Joás proyectó restaurar el templo del Señor.5 Reunió a los sacerdotes y levitas y les dijo: –Recorran las ciudades de Judá y recauden fondos de todo Israel para reparar todos los años el templo de su Dios. Sean diligentes en ello. Pero los levitas dieron largas al asunto.6 Entonces el rey llamó al sumo sacerdote Yoyadá y le dijo: –¿Por qué no has urgido a los levitas para que recaudaran en Judá y Jerusalén el tributo impuesto a la asamblea de Israel por Moisés, siervo del Señor, con destino a la tienda del testimonio?7 Pues la perversa Atalía y sus hijos han dejado que se deteriore el templo de Dios y han puesto al servicio de los baales todos los objetos sagrados del templo del Señor.8 El rey ordenó hacer un cofre que pusieron delante de la puerta del templo del Señor.9 Se recordó a Judá y Jerusalén la obligación de traer al Señor el tributo que Moisés, siervo de Dios, impuso a Israel en el desierto.10 Los jefes y el pueblo lo aceptaron con alegría, y se apresuraron a depositar su dinero en el cofre hasta llenarlo.11 Una vez lleno, los levitas lo llevaban a la inspección real, al secretario del rey y al inspector designado por el sumo sacerdote, lo vaciaban y lo colocaban de nuevo en su lugar. Así una y otra vez; se reunió gran cantidad de dinero,12 que el rey y Yoyadá entregaron a los inspectores de las obras del templo. Estos contrataron talladores de piedras, carpinteros, herreros y artesanos en bronce para el templo del Señor.13 Se trabajó a un ritmo tan acelerado que en poco tiempo el templo de Dios recobró su antiguo esplendor plenamente consolidado.14 Llevaron al rey y a Yoyadá el dinero sobrante y con él hicieron utensilios para el templo: utensilios para el culto y los holocaustos, copas y otros objetos de oro y plata. Mientras Yoyadá vivió, se ofrecieron continuamente holocaustos en el templo del Señor.15 Yoyadá, colmados sus días, murió muy viejo, a la edad de ciento treinta años.16 Fue sepultado con los reyes en la ciudad de David, porque se había portado bien con Israel, con Dios y con su templo.17 Muerto Yoyadá, los jefes de Judá vinieron a rendir homenaje al rey, que esta vez siguió sus consejos.18 Abandonaron el templo del Señor, Dios de sus antepasados, y se pasaron al culto idolátrico. Esto provocó la ira divina sobre Judá y Jerusalén.19 El Señor les envió profetas a ver si se convertían a él, pero no hicieron caso de sus advertencias.20 Zacarías, hijo de Yoyadá, sacerdote, movido por el espíritu de Dios, se presentó al pueblo y le dijo: –Esto dice Dios: ¿Por qué no obedecen los mandamientos del Señor? Nada conseguirán. Han abandonado al Señor, y él los abandonará a ustedes.21 Pero ellos conspiraron contra Zacarías y por orden del rey lo apedrearon en el atrio del templo del Señor.22 Así pues, el rey Joás olvidó la lealtad de Yoyadá, padre de Zacarías, y mandó matar a su hijo, que dijo al morir: –Que el Señor lo vea y te pida cuentas.23 Pasado un año, el ejército de Siria atacó a Joás, penetró en Judá y Jerusalén, mató a todos los jefes del pueblo y llevó todo su botín al rey de Damasco.24 El ejército invasor era poco numeroso; pero el Señor entregó en sus manos un ejército mucho mayor, porque habían abandonado al Señor, el Dios de sus antepasados. Así dieron su merecido a Joás,25 que al retirarse el ejército sirio, quedó gravemente herido. Sus súbditos conspiraron contra él para vengar la muerte del hijo del sacerdote Yoyadá y lo mataron en su cama. Murió y lo enterraron en la ciudad de David, pero no en el panteón de los reyes.26 Los que conspiraron fueron: Zabud, hijo de Simat, la amonita, y Jozabad, hijo de Simrit, la moabita.27 Lo relativo a sus hijos, al tributo y a la restauración del templo de Dios, está escrito en el comentario del Libro de los reyes. 1 In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.2 And Jehoash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all his days, because Jehoiada the priest instructed him.3 Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued to sacrifice and make offerings on the high places.4 Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the holy things that is brought into the house of the LORD, the money for which each man is assessed—the money from the assessment of persons—and the money that a man's heart prompts him to bring into the house of the LORD,5 let the priests take, each from his donor, and let them repair the house wherever any need of repairs is discovered.”6 But by the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, the priests had made no repairs on the house.7 Therefore King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests and said to them, “Why are you not repairing the house? Now therefore take no more money from your donors, but hand it over for the repair of the house.”8 So the priests agreed that they should take no more money from the people, and that they should not repair the house.9 Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest and bored a hole in the lid of it and set it beside the altar on the right side as one entered the house of the LORD. And the priests who guarded the threshold put in it all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD.10 And whenever they saw that there was much money in the chest, the king's secretary and the high priest came up and they bagged and counted the money that was found in the house of the LORD.11 Then they would give the money that was weighed out into the hands of the workmen who had the oversight of the house of the LORD. And they paid it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the house of the LORD,12 and to the masons and the stonecutters, as well as to buy timber and quarried stone for making repairs on the house of the LORD, and for any outlay for the repairs of the house.13 But there were not made for the house of the LORD basins of silver, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, or any vessels of gold, or of silver, from the money that was brought into the house of the LORD,14 for that was given to the workmen who were repairing the house of the LORD with it.15 And they did not ask an accounting from the men into whose hand they delivered the money to pay out to the workmen, for they dealt honestly.16 The money from the guilt offerings and the money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the LORD; it belonged to the priests.17 At that time Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Gath and took it. But when Hazael set his face to go up against Jerusalem,18 Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred gifts that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah his fathers, the kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own sacred gifts, and all the gold that was found in the treasuries of the house of the LORD and of the king's house, and sent these to Hazael king of Syria. Then Hazael went away from Jerusalem.19 Now the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?20 His servants arose and made a conspiracy and struck down Joash in the house of Millo, on the way that goes down to Silla.21 It was Jozacar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, who struck him down, so that he died. And they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
