The Death of Abimelech

Abimelech lies wounded beside the burning tower of Thebez as his armor-bearer raises the sword that will end his life. The fallen ruler, stripped of triumph and surrounded by the wreckage of siege warfare, reaches his final moment after attempting to burn the tower where the people had taken refuge. The scene reflects the account in Judges 9, when a woman cast an upper millstone from the tower and crushed Abimelech’s skull. Rather than be remembered as killed by a woman, he commanded his young armor-bearer to slay him.

The composition emphasizes the collapse of violent ambition: fire, broken stones, discarded helmet, and the poised blade all point to divine judgment overtaking a self-made king. This artwork serves Bible teaching on the Book of Judges, the danger of ruthless power, the downfall of pride, and God’s justice against treachery.
