26 Llegaron a la región de los gerasenos, que está enfrente de Galilea.27 Al saltar Jesús a tierra, le salió al encuentro un hombre de la ciudad, un endemoniado que desde hacía mucho tiempo andaba semidesnudo y no vivía en una casa, sino entre los sepulcros.28 Al ver a Jesús, se puso a gritar, se postró a sus pies y dijo con fuerte voz: –¿Qué tengo yo que ver contigo, Jesús, Hijo de Dios Altísimo? Te pido que no me atormentes.29 Y es que Jesús estaba mandando al espíritu impuro que saliera de aquel hombre. Pues muchas veces el demonio se apoderaba de él, y a pesar de que lo ataban con cadenas y lo sujetaban con argollas, él rompía las ataduras y, empujado por el demonio, se iba a lugares desiertos.30 Jesús le preguntó: –¿Cuál es tu nombre? Respondió: –Legión. Porque habían entrado en él muchos demonios.31 Y le pedían que no les ordenara regresar al abismo donde habitaban.32 Había allí una gran cantidad de cerdos buscando alimento en la montaña; los demonios le rogaron que les permitiera entrar en ellos. Y Jesús les concedió lo que pedían.33 Los demonios salieron del hombre, entraron en los cerdos y entonces todos se lanzaron por el barranco al lago y se ahogaron.34 Los que cuidaban los cerdos, al ver lo ocurrido, huyeron y lo contaron tanto en la ciudad como en los alrededores.35 Salieron, pues, a ver lo ocurrido y, al presentarse donde estaba Jesús, encontraron al hombre del que habían salido los demonios sentado a los pies de Jesús, vestido y en su sano juicio; y se llenaron de miedo.36 Quienes habían visto lo ocurrido les contaron cómo Jesús había salvado al endemoniado.37 Entonces toda la gente de la región de los gerasenos le rogó que se alejara de ellos, porque les había entrado mucho miedo. Jesús subió a la barca y se dispuso a regresar.38 El hombre de quien habían salido los demonios le pedía ir con él, pero Jesús lo despidió diciendo:

1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.”13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered the pigs, and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and were drowned in the sea.14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened.15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs.17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him.19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
Matthew 8
28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way.29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them.31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.”32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters.33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men.34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.
