Job sits on the barren ground in sackcloth-like drapery, his body marked by painful sores as he lifts his face in anguish and endurance. Behind him, his companions approach in grief, beginning the long vigil of silence described after Job’s calamity. The wilderness setting, scattered stones, and empty horizon emphasize the stripping away of wealth, health, and earthly comfort. This artwork portrays Job 2, when Satan afflicts Job with loathsome sores and Job remains steadfast before God. His friends—Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar—come to mourn with him, sitting with him because “his suffering was very great.” The scene is well suited for teaching on suffering, lament, perseverance, spiritual testing, and faith that clings to God when answers are hidden.
