1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe.3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.”5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha.14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek.21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’”22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom,24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him.33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe.36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight.40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
Luke 23
1 Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate.2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”3 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.”5 But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.”6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.7 And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.9 So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer.10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.11 And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.12 And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him.15 Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him.16 I will therefore punish and release him.”18 But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”—19 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder.20 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus,21 but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!”22 A third time he said to them, “Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.”23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.26 And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.27 And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”32 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.35 And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!”36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”38 There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,45 while the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!”48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.50 Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,51 who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God.52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid.54 It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.55 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid.56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

Pero ellos gritaron todavía más fuerte: –¡Crucifícalo!15 Pilato, entonces, queriendo complacer a la gente, les soltó a Barrabás y entregó a Jesús para que lo azotaran y, después, lo crucificaran.16 Los soldados lo llevaron al interior del palacio, o sea, al pretorio, y llamaron a toda la tropa.17 Lo vistieron con un manto rojo y, trenzando una corona de espinas, se la pusieron.18 Después comenzaron a saludarlo, diciendo: –¡Salve, rey de los judíos!19 Lo golpeaban en la cabeza con una caña, lo escupían y, poniéndose de rodillas, le rendían homenaje.20 Después de burlarse de él, le quitaron el manto rojo, lo vistieron con sus ropas y lo sacaron para crucificarlo.21 Y a un tal Simón, natural de Cirene, el padre de Alejandro y de Rufo, que al regresar del campo pasaba por allí, lo obligaron a llevar la cruz de Jesús.22 Condujeron a Jesús hasta el Gólgota, que quiere decir lugar de la Calavera.23 Le daban vino mezclado con mirra, pero él no lo aceptó.24 Después lo crucificaron y se repartieron su ropa, sorteándola, para ver qué se llevaba cada uno.25 Eran las nueve de la mañana cuando lo crucificaron.26 Había un letrero en el que estaba escrita la causa de su condena: «El rey de los judíos».27 Con Jesús crucificaron a dos bandidos, uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda.29 Los que pasaban por allí lo insultaban, haciendo muecas y diciendo: –¡Eh, tú que destruías el templo y lo reconstruías en tres días!30 ¡Sálvate a ti mismo, bajando de la cruz!31 Y de la misma manera los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley, se burlaban de él diciéndose unos a otros: –¡A otros salvó y a sí mismo no puede salvarse!32 ¡El Mesías! ¡El rey de Israel! ¡Que baje ahora de la cruz, para que lo veamos y creamos! Hasta los que habían sido crucificados junto con él lo insultaban.33 Al llegar el mediodía, toda la región quedó a oscuras hasta las tres de la tarde.34 A esa hora Jesús gritó con fuerte voz: –Eloí, Eloí, ¿lemá sabaktaní? Que quiere decir: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?35 Algunos de los presentes decían al oírlo: –¡Está llamando a Elías!36 Uno fue corriendo a empapar una esponja en vinagre y, sujetándola en una caña, le ofrecía de beber, diciendo: –Vamos a ver si viene Elías a descolgarlo.37 Entonces Jesús, lanzando un fuerte grito, expiró.38 La cortina del templo se rasgó en dos de arriba abajo.39 Y el oficial romano que estaba frente a Jesús, al ver que había expirado de aquella manera, dijo: –Verdaderamente este hombre era Hijo de Dios.40 Algunas mujeres contemplaban la escena desde lejos. Entre ellas María Magdalena, María, la madre de Santiago el menor y de José, y Salomé,41 que habían seguido a Jesús y lo habían asistido cuando estaba en Galilea. Había, además, otras muchas que habían subido con él a Jerusalén.42 Al caer la tarde, como era la preparación de la pascua, es decir, la víspera del sábado,43 llegó José de Arimatea, que era miembro distinguido del Consejo de Ancianos y esperaba el reino de Dios, y tuvo el valor de presentarse a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús.44 Pilato se extrañó de que hubiera muerto tan pronto y, llamando al oficial romano, le preguntó si había muerto ya.45 Informado por el oficial romano, entregó el cadáver a José.46 Este compró una sábana, lo bajó, lo envolvió en la sábana, lo puso en un sepulcro excavado en la roca y tapó la entrada del sepulcro con una piedra.47 María Magdalena y María la madre de José observaban dónde lo ponían.
Matthew 27
1 Cuando amaneció, todos los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo tomaron la decisión de matar a Jesús.2 Lo llevaron atado y lo entregaron a Pilato, el gobernador.3 Mientras tanto, Judas, el traidor, al ver que habían condenado a Jesús, sintió remordimiento y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a los ancianos4 diciendo: –He pecado entregando a un inocente. Ellos contestaron: –¿A nosotros qué nos importa? Allá tú.5 Entonces Judas, arrojando en el templo las monedas, se retiró, luego fue y se ahorcó.6 Los jefes de los sacerdotes tomaron las monedas y dijeron: –No se pueden echar en el tesoro del templo, porque son precio de sangre.7 Y después de deliberar, compraron con ellas el campo del alfarero para sepultura de los extranjeros.8 Por eso, aquel campo se llama hasta hoy «Campo de sangre».9 Así se cumplió lo anunciado por el profeta Jeremías: Tomaron las treinta monedas de plata, precio que le pusieron los hijos de Israel,10 y compraron el campo del alfarero, según lo que me mandó el Señor.11 Jesús compareció ante el gobernador, y éste le preguntó: –¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos? Jesús respondió: –Tú lo dices.12 Pero no respondió nada a las acusaciones que le hacían los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos.13 Entonces Pilato le preguntó: –¿No oyes todo lo que dicen contra ti?14 Pero él no le respondió nada, de suerte que el gobernador se quedó muy extrañado.15 Por la fiesta, solía el gobernador conceder al pueblo la libertad de un preso, el que ellos quisieran.16 Tenía entonces un preso famoso, llamado Barrabás.17 Así que, viéndolos reunidos, les preguntó Pilato: –¿A quién quieren que les suelte, a Barrabás o a Jesús, el llamado Mesías?18 Pues se daba cuenta de que lo habían entregado por envidia.19 Estaba aún sentado en el tribunal cuando su mujer envió este mensaje: –No te metas con ese justo, porque esta noche he tenido pesadillas horribles por su causa.20 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos persuadieron a la gente para que pidiera la libertad de Barrabás y la muerte de Jesús.21 El gobernador volvió a preguntarles: –¿A quién de los dos quieren que les suelte? Respondieron ellos: –A Barrabás.22 Pilato preguntó de nuevo: –¿Y qué hago entonces con Jesús, el llamado Mesías? Respondieron todos: –¡Crucifícalo!23 El les dijo: –Pues, ¿qué mal ha hecho? Pero ellos gritaron todavía más fuerte: –¡Crucifícalo!24 Viendo Pilato que no conseguía nada, sino que la gente se amotinaba cada vez más, tomó agua y se lavó las manos ante el pueblo, diciendo: –No me hago responsable de esta muerte; allá ustedes.25 Todo el pueblo respondió: –¡Nosotros y nuestros hijos nos hacemos responsables de esta muerte!26 Entonces les soltó a Barrabás; y a Jesús, después de azotarlo, lo entregó para que fuera crucificado.27 Los soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al pretorio y reunieron en torno a él a toda la tropa.28 Lo desnudaron y le echaron por encima un manto de color rojo;29 trenzaron una corona de espinas y se la pusieron en la cabeza y una caña en su mano derecha; luego se arrodillaban ante él y se burlaban, diciendo: –¡Salve, rey de los judíos!30 Le escupían, le quitaban la caña y lo golpeaban con ella en la cabeza.31 Después de burlarse de él, le quitaron el manto, lo vistieron con sus ropas, y lo llevaron para crucificarlo.32 Cuando salían, encontraron a un hombre de Cirene, llamado Simón, y lo obligaron a llevar la cruz de Jesús.33 Al llegar al lugar llamado Gólgota, es decir, lugar de la Calavera,34 dieron a Jesús vino mezclado con hiel para que lo bebiera, pero, después de probarlo, no quiso beberlo.35 Los que lo crucificaron se sortearon su ropa y se la repartieron.36 Y se sentaron allí para custodiarlo.37 Sobre su cabeza pusieron un letrero con la causa de su condena: «Este es Jesús, el rey de los judíos».38 Al mismo tiempo crucificaron a dos bandidos, uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda.39 Los que pasaban por allí lo insultaban haciendo muecas40 y diciendo: –Tú, que destruías el templo y lo construías en tres días, sálvate a ti mismo; si eres Hijo de Dios, baja de la cruz.41 Y de la misma manera los jefes de los sacerdotes, junto con los maestros de la ley y los ancianos, se burlaban de él diciendo:42 –A otros salvó, y a sí mismo no puede salvarse. Si es rey de Israel, que baje ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en él.43 Ha puesto su confianza en Dios; que lo libre ahora, si es que lo quiere, ya que decía: «Soy Hijo de Dios».44 Hasta los bandidos que habían sido crucificados junto con él lo insultaban.45 Desde el mediodía, toda la región se cubrió de tinieblas hasta las tres de la tarde.46 A esa hora Jesús gritó con fuerte voz: –Elí, Elí. ¿lemá sabaktani? Que quiere decir: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?47 Algunos de los que estaban allí, al oírlo, decían: –Está llamando a Elías.48 En seguida, uno de ellos fue corriendo en busca de una esponja, la empapó en vinagre y, sujetándola en una caña, le ofrecía de beber.49 Los otros decían: –Vamos a ver si viene Elías a salvarlo.50 Y Jesús, dando de nuevo un fuerte grito, entregó su espíritu.51 Entonces, la cortina del templo se rasgó en dos partes de arriba abajo; la tierra tembló y las piedras se resquebrajaron;52 se abrieron los sepulcros y muchos santos que habían muerto resucitaron,53 salieron de los sepulcros y, después de que Jesús resucitó, entraron en la ciudad santa y se aparecieron a muchos.54 El oficial romano, y los que estaban con él custodiando a Jesús, al sentir el terremoto y ver todo lo que pasaba, se llenaron de miedo y decían: –Verdaderamente éste era Hijo de Dios.55 Muchas mujeres que habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea para asistirlo, estaban allí y contemplaban la escena desde lejos.56 Entre ellas, estaban María Magdalena y María, la madre de Santiago y de José, y la madre de los Zebedeos.57 Al caer la tarde, llegó un hombre rico, llamado José, originario de Arimatea, que también se había hecho discípulo de Jesús.58 Este José se presentó a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. Pilato mandó que se lo entregaran.59 José tomó el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia60 y lo puso en un sepulcro nuevo que había hecho excavar en la roca. Tapó la entrada del sepulcro con una gran piedra y se fue.61 María Magdalena y la otra María estaban allí, sentadas frente al sepulcro.62 Al día siguiente, es decir, el día después de la preparación de la pascua, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los fariseos se reunieron ante Pilato63 y le dijeron: –Señor, recordamos que ese impostor dijo cuando aún vivía: «A los tres días resucitaré».64 Así que manda asegurar el sepulcro hasta el día tercero, no sea que vengan sus discípulos, roben su cuerpo y digan al pueblo que ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y este último engaño sea peor que el primero.65 Pilato les respondió: –Ahí tienen la guardia; vayan y asegúrenlo como ustedes saben hacer.66 Ellos fueron, aseguraron el sepulcro y sellaron la piedra dejando allí la guardia.
